31066 CREATOR 3-in-1 Space Shuttle Explorer

 31066 CREATOR Space Shuttle Explorer

I have never done a review on a CREATOR set, so today I decided it would be nice if I did. I present to you 31066 CREATOR Space Shuttle Adventure! It's a great set, and the models that you can build are unlike any other space-themed CREATOR options. Sadly, this set didn't get much shelf life and was retired a few years ago, which makes this set a hard one to find. Anyway, like most CREATOR sets, the minifig count is pretty low, as this set only comes with one, an astronaut. This set includes a space shuttle, a satellite, and an astronaut minifigure, as mentioned before.

Not much to see here. Just a small space shuttle and a minifig, but believe me, when you look inside this build you'll be amazed.

The minifig is decent, and resembles your good old LEGO astronaut, and the backpack that it's wearing is a quick and easy build to put together. It also looks good. The clips at the sides are very maneuverable and don't really get in the way while playing with the astronaut. Now, let's take a look at the shuttle.

The space shuttle is a small yet tidy build, and although it makes use of many tricky methods to give the shuttle the signature look of a real space shuttle, the fruits of your labours come at the end of the exciting build, and let me tell you, they are great.

All the work that you put into building this shuttle is totally worth it. Just look at this thing! The middle of the vehicle opens out revealing an okay-sized space storing a highly-detailed satellite. TECHNIC parts allow the satellite to fold out of the ship and into the endless vacuum of space. The best thing is that the astronaut won't suffocate and die because the cockpit is separated from this room (very funny)! Anyway, the point is that this feature is awesome and allows for more enjoyable play for little ones.

Are you wondering how the tail of the ship stands like that? Well, the build makes use of clips to give this tail an angle. It's really clean and simple, which is why I love it so much. And guess what? This is only the first model you can choose to build. We still have 2 more.

This build is a lunar rover, and it looks really amazing, but it has absolutely zero functions. This build is just for show, in my opinion. Just like the shuttle, there is a little driver's seat, but nothing else. I've not much to say about this set, except that the detailing is a step up from your usual CREATOR set.

Now, last but not least, I present the moon base!

It looks pretty awkward at first glance, but look inside the building and you will find some really cool stuff. But you have to admit, the plates under the base make it look like a house on black picnic mats. I would like it better if there were just the building and no elements under it. It would look more like a moon base, even though I've never seen one. Not many people have.

The mechanical arm is cool nevertheless, with the wrench at the end making it look like a rover's, with all the tools on the ends.  The solar panels are a nice addition to an already skillfully designed base. It's just a nice extra touch.

The hatch on one end of the base opens up to allow the astronaut to enter a small yet tidy living quarters. The detailing in here is really appreciated, just like with the rover, except that there are actually functions here. Anyway, I like the space shuttle best, but this will do as well. The rover, on the other hand, is a whole different story...

Just one more thing... this set is discontinued (like I previously said), so the prices I give here may not be accurate.

This Space Shuttle Explorer starts at around $294 new and around $162 used.
