New Releases: The 100+ sets coming out this month
Hello! Today is January 1st, so happy new year! A topic today which is more important than that though, is the release of more than 100 new sets across various themes including CITY, STAR WARS, NINJAGO, and CREATOR. It's a very exciting time for LEGO fans and so the company's online site will undoubtedly have heavy internet traffic for the next few days. Today, in this article, I want to cover a few of the new releases, sharing my thoughts and opinions. Here we go!
1. 80113 Family Reunion Celebration
This set is a Lunar New Year set that includes over 1800 pieces and 13 minifigures. The main build in the set is this traditional Chinese modular-looking building. I wouldn't be surprised if it indeed was compatible with the other modular structures.
The building has a pretty detailed interior with various rooms like the kitchen, dining room, restroom, and entrance, which go to show that this building is supposed to be a restaurant. The building's floors can be removed and the back is open for easy play.
I like this set, but I'm not too happy about the crazy price: US$129.99/£89.99/€99.99. Come on, LEGO! A price like that belongs on a themed set with licenses. I'm pretty sure Lunar New Year (or Chinese New Year) isn't copyrighted. I know, I know - it's a large set. It could be cheaper though, and that mindblowing price tag is what I don't care for about this set. Otherwise, it's decent and definitely would go well in a city alongside some modulars. 8.5/10.
2. 75372 STAR WARS Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack
This set is one of the few new STAR WARS sets coming out this month. It looks decent but I'm not too satisfied with the price. US$29.99 is not a steal, and it's not a bad deal either, but it could be a few dollars less. Anyway, the set includes 215 pieces and has 9 minifigures. That's pretty good for a battle pack, as they usually contain 4 to 5 minifigs. This set is for people 7+.
One of the clone troopers in the set appears to be a shock trooper due to the red coloring on their helmet and torso. The others are just generic Phase II clone troopers. One of the hallmarks of this set is the tri-droid which possesses a head capable of rotating. There is also a STAP speeder for one battle droid to ride. The large amount of super battle droids in this set is also an attractive prospect for STAR WARS fans as we usually get only one or two in the sets where they do appear. Three super battle droids plus two normal ones is decent, man! I'm not too impressed by the speeder but I do like the little fortification with the projectile gun. Overall, this set is really good for forming quick battle groups, but the price will probably get you. Let's say you want three of these: you'll have to pay approximately US$90. No thank you! It's up to you to decide though. What do you think of this set? I'll give it an 7.5/10.
3. 21251 Steve's Desert Expedition
I decided to include this set as the final one in this article because it's a fun little set with some weird-looking figures. The set has 75 pieces and is directed at people 6 years old and up. It includes a tent, campfire and some other generic survival stuff as well as a phantom, a camel and a Steve minifigure with an out-of-the-ordinary facial expression. The price isn't to justified but it's not too bad either: $10.99.
Looking at the set, it doesn't give a good first impression but it is, after all, it is just a small set (essentially a large accessory to your collection). Steve's updated facial expression is the stuff of nightmares, but it's also a funny part to have. Not too much bothers me about this set, apart from the fact that the baby camel's legs are seriously short compared to the neck. It just bothers the obsessive part of me for some reason. Otherwise, the set is fine. There is an interesting and alternative cactus design making an appearance next to the tent which actually doesn't look too bad. The phantom seems a little cheap due to the lack of pieces, but it still gets the point across that it is a phantom.
I'll have to give this set a 7/10. Not too bad but there aren't many notable features either.
Conclusion
I'll finish up here. A little note: the release of this article was delayed almost an entire month because of technical problems so I apologize about that. Also, I want to say that some new sets have been released which I do want to go over and review like some burger truck thing from CITY, so look forward to that. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this article although it was a little late and do remember to check back next time for more content.
